During 1954 the Society produced a special issue of the Journal dealing with the Great North of Scotland Railway; this has long been out of print and it has been decided to rewrite the original material and add much that has come to light since that time.
The Great North, as it was by this shortened title that reference was generally made to the line, was located in the northeast area of Scotland and was therefore off the usual tourist route. This isolation however did not prevent it from being of interest to enthusiasts, for it possessed an individuality giving it a character of considerable charm.
In the following pages we have endeavoured to put on record some of the local atmosphere of the line; the Great North served its area for sixty-eight years without change of title and only lost this with the grouping of railways in 1923.
While a certain amount of the material is based on personal recollection, most has been culled from records of various types and full acknowledgement is provided.
